The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced the discovery of a small, smiling sphinx at the eastern side of the temple of Dendera in Qena Province, 280 miles south of Cairo. A team from the Egyptian archaeological mission from Ain Shams University found the sphinx in a Roman-era chapel along with a limestone offering table. The archaeologists believe the sphinx may be a representation of the Roman emperor Claudius, who ruled from AD 41 to 54. A stele was also unearthed that bears an inscription in demotic script and hieroglyphics. A full study of the inscription should help reveal the context of the finds and the identity of the sphinx.
